What You Get Is What You See

Updated: Mar 2, 2020

Twenty Twenty! The year and the entire decade screams out its name for perfectly clear vision. What could possibly be a better prompt to set us on the track of getting more focus and clarity in our lives? What better inspiration for getting about the business of planning a vision of the version of yourself and your life you are hoping to create?'

I recently took part in an exercise to help me get a clearer view of what I want my life to look like. I designed my perfect day, my dream job and my ideal life on paper. The entire process took only a few minutes. You may be asking how I could knock that out so quickly. The answer is that I am, and have been for most of my life, in the process making the life I have dreamed of living. Isn't that what we should all be doing? We get one crack at this my friends.

Years ago I read a slogan on a t-shirt or a social media meme, telling me I should live the life I love and love the life I live. I instantly thought that was some astounding advice, and I decided I should do exactly that. Therefore, my life is a life I love and I do love my life. I read. I write. I create, I inspire others. I help others. I am doing my little part to be the change I wish to see in the world. I travel a lot. I am in love with a person who loves me. I have built an amazing tribe of people in my life who celebrate my successes, believe in me, support my dreams and love the person I am at every stage of my life.

The very first step in creating the life you want and being the best version of yourself is to decide what that looks like. You can't get where you are going if you don't know where you need and want to be. It's like a road map. You are at point A and you are trying to reach point B.

It means you have to actively gain insight to determine what your ultimate life plan should look like. The process of gaining insight means to have the power to see what is not evident to the average mind. It means using your intuition or perception to dig deeper. The word itself literally means seeing inward.

I would like to help you do that right now. You don’t need anything fancy and you don’t need much time. just go to a quiet place with a pen and paper.

1. Get Real Be honest with where you are right this minute. Are you honestly working at a job you enjoy, that feeds your purpose? If it doesn't, can you say at least parts of it fit that description? Perhaps you don't love your job, but you do get to be creative or be of service to others and that feeds your soul. Are you honestly living where you want to live? Do you love your physical surroundings?

Take a moment, right now, to write down what you love about your life. Start your sentence with "I love" and play fill in the blank with things you wouldn't change about your life.

If you don't know where you are and where you want to be, you can't get there from here.

2. Get Clear Be very clear about what your ideal life looks like but more importantly what the ideal YOU looks like. Are you happy with your weight? Are you happy with your character? Are you happy with the vibes and the energy you give to yourself and to others? If not what will you do in the next twelve months to change that?

Take a moment right this instance to write down what you want to improve. Believe it is within you to improve it and then write it down as if it has already happened. For example, I would write, "I love how much better my clothes fit since I released over fifty pounds. It is so nice to not have to drag that around. I have so much more energy and I know I am so much healthier!" Incidentally I did ditch fifty four pounds since April of this year, so it is super easy for me to write this part.

One of the first times I did an exercise like this one, I was unemployed and I identified two things I wanted to change immediately. I wanted to have a job and I wanted to travel more. Believe it or not, I landed a very well-paying job within the next few months, and within a year I received a promotion for a job which required me to travel on a regular basis. I was living exactly what I wrote. Is it magic? Is it fate? I have my theories, but it doesn't matter what it actually is. Just know that you can't start envisioning the best you or your best life until you write it down and believe it. Call it to yourself. Claim it as if it's already yours.

3. Get Excited Whenever we go on a vacation I get like a little kid anticipating Santa Claus. I chatter about it. I research it. I jot notes about it. I make plans for what I will do once I arrive. I am so eager and enthusiastic and focused on this event, I can barely think about anything else. My eagerness and enthusiasm is so prevalent that others around me become excited about it also. It is my hope that you get that little kid anticipation and hopefulness and blind abandon about what you want to accomplish in the year of focus and clarity.

If you want to be happier, build a brand, grow your business or improve anything you have to get excited about it and what it looks like and how it feels. Woo hoo, let's do this thing!

4. Get Going What are you waiting for? If not now, when? If you have decided what needs improved and you have done the work to figure out what better looks like and you are excited about the possible outcome get going! Don't wait. Do one thing right this instant that your future self will thank you for. It's never too early or too late to focus on your dreams. That dream does not become a reality unless you are willing to put in the time and effort to make it come to life.

I dreamed of building a website, writing a blog and having my own podcast. When I spoke it out loud to my tribe I breathed life into it. It became real. Then, I laid out exactly what I wanted it to be about and look like and sound like. With great intention, I planned what I wanted it to put out into the world. I got clear about what it already was, if only in my mind.

Then, I got exhilarated and delighted about what I was doing and today, only one month after giving this idea a spark, it has become the fire that consumes me. I have almost three hundred followers, a sponsor for my podcast, and several interviewees waiting to be interviewed. I am in love with this thing I created. I have had amazing, positive feedback from people I consider to be my role models in the industry.

Envision the future. Keep going. Keep believing. Keep yourself focused on the why. My why is simple. I wanted to put more good out into the world at a time the world really needs more good. I won't stop until that is no longer true. There is so much more I want to to do with my dream. I envision a community of people dedicated to being the change we wish to see in the world. I honestly do. I actually see a crowd of people, in my mind's eye, saying, "We are dedicated to being the change we want to see in the world," They are all wearing upliftuniverse t-shirts that say 'Spread kindness around like confetti.' It's a beautiful day!

The future looks bright.
